Description
There are many beautiful places in the world, however, the people of Dubrovnik claim their city to be the most beautiful.
This is where the warm, southern climate, the spacious blue sky, the emerald green and dark blue crystal clear sea depths touch the rocky shore and spill into numerous coves and bays, onto sandy beaches and steep reefs decorated with the lushest Mediterranean and subtropical flora.
This holiday is designed for those who wish to explore the most beautiful places of the Dubrovnik area in Croatia by walking / hiking.
The city of Dubrovnik is situated in the very south of the Republic of Croatia. It is a work of human inspiration, true in harmony and form. This fortress town was founded in the first half of the 7th century and now holds a spot on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Apart from a great history, Dubrovnik is well known for the beautiful nature that surrounds it. Lopud, Kolocep and Sipan belong to the Elaphiti Islands archipelago – 13 green islands covered by pine forests, free of traffic, with lots of sunshine and sandy beaches, and under an hour’s sailing time from Dubrovnik. They are not just places of incredible natural beauty, but also open air museums of history, art, architecture and folklore.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Dubrovnik
Arrive in Dubrovnik and enjoy famous Old Town and city walls before meeting with us at the harbour. From there we will transfer you to Zaton Bay. Zaton is a picturesque bay, 2 km (1.2 mi) long and situated just 8 km (5 mi) from Dubrovnik. Nestled in the bay are three willages – Zaton Mali, Zaton Veliki and Stikovica, and each of them has cozy waterfront restaurants where one can savor local specialties. At the first dinner together we will introduce all members of the group and go through the itinerary of this island walking holidays.
Accommodation: Zaton Bay; Meals: D
Day 2: Walk Mljet Island National Park
In the morning we take a boat from Dubrovnik to Mljet Island National Park. The Park boasts two beautiful salt-water lakes. The larger of the lakes has a tiny islet and there is a medieval monastery on that islet. Now, that is a sight you don’t see often. We will explore the Park on foot, enjoy a swim in the warm waters of the lakes and time permitting take a short boat ride the islet and monastery. Later in the afternoon we will take a boat back to Dubrovnik and return to Zaton for a quiet evening.
Accommodation: Zaton Bay; Meals: B; Walking: 3-4 hours, easy/moderate; Ferry: 1h 30min each way
Day 3: Visit Dubrovnik and Hike Mount Srd
Playwright George Bernard Shaw famously said: “Those who seek paradise on earth should come to Dubrovnik.” So, this day you will explore this paradise on earth, its 6 m (20 ft) thick walls, 17 fortresses, its cobbled streets and charming restaurants, and learn about its fascinating history. After sightseeing we hike to Srd, the mountain protecting Dubrovnik from the north, offering a great view of the area. You an also take an optional trip to the nearby Lokrum Island and enjoy its botanical garden and olive groves, or take the walking tour of Dubrovnik’s famous city walls. In the afternoon we will catch the boat to Sipan Island where we will be staying for the rest of the trip.
Accommodation: Sipan Island; Meals: B, D; Walking: 3 hours, moderate; Drive: 15 min; Ferry: 1h.
Day 4: Walk Sipan Island
On the fourth day we explore the largest of the Elaphiti Islands – Sipan. Colourful villages of Sudurad and Luka Sipanska and the valley between them have preserved the real country lifestyle, chapels, monasteries, palaces and summer houses of ancient Dubrovnik aristocracy. This island is unbelievably rich in cultural heritage, tales from the past and well-preserved monuments that witnessed its turbulent history. We will explore them by walking and there will be plenty of time to relax on beaches or in cafes.
Accommodation: Sipan Island; Meals: B, D; Walking: 3- 4 hours, easy/moderate.
Day 5: Optional Trip or Beach Day
Today is the last day for those who booked the 5-day option. We will transfer you to the airport, or if you are staying if Croatia our guides will happily share with you tips on how to get the best of your experience. The rest of the group is free to do whatever you enjoy the most: sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, walking or sea kayaking or sightseeing. You can also take an optional trip: your guide will share all the options with you.
Accommodation: Sipan Island; Meals: B.
Day 6: Hike Kolocep Island
We take the local boat in the morning and visit Kolocep Island, so very interesting for its dramatic scenery with rocky beaches, high cliffs and colorful reefs. There are no cars on this tiny island so the walk through the villages will be very enjoyable. On your walk across the island you will encounter many architectural remnants, witnesses of the turbulent history of the area: an old pre-Romantic chapel, ruins of the basilica, summer homes of Dubrovnik nobility, Napoelon’s fort and more. A pleasant noon siesta will take place in a quiet and relaxing atmosphere of Gornje Celo turquoise bay, near one of the best fish restaurants in the area.
Accommodation: Sipan Island; Meals: B, L; Walking: 3.5 hours easy/moderate; Ferry: 35 min each way.
Day 7: Walk Lopud Island
Lopud is another island free of traffic. The only town on the island has no more than a couple of hundred permanent residents. Walking through the town you will enjoy the beautiful old houses and streets adorned with flowers. The sandy beach of Sunj Bay on Lopud’s southern side is the most popular beach of the Dubrovnik area. However this island’s true treasures are its tiny churches and a fort strategically located at one of its highest points. In the past it served as an observation point and it used to protect the island and the town of Dubrovnik. Today it offers stunning views of the Elaphiti Archipelago and Mljet Island.
Accommodation: Sipan Island; Meals: B, D; Walking: 4 hours; Ferry: 20 min each way.
